How It Works

Your success is our success.

We believe that every face matters in the pursuit of documenting our collective history. That's why 500 Faces will work with you every step of the way to curate and preserve your visual family history. Once you have uploaded photos on 10 ancestors, you will have contributed to our goal to do this for 500 faces in the coming year!

Here's how it'll work:

01.

Identify 10 ancestors

Look through your old photographs and select up to 10 ancestors you would like to focus on. Which photos are the oldest?  Which ones are of your grandparents or earlier?

02.

Select photos

Try to find up to 5 photos of each ancestor, ideally at different stages of their life. Photos of them as a child, in a yearbook, at their wedding, or a family portrait are all good places to start.

03.

Determine relationships

Do you already have a family tree built, so that you know exactly where each of these people fit?  If a group photo, can you identify everyone in the picture?

04.

Update family tree

If you already have an on-line family tree, ensure that these selected ancestors, and others in the photo are documented.  If there is no on-line tree, 500 Faces can help you get started in building one.

05.

Tell what you know

What do you know about each photo?  Where and when was it taken? How did it come into your possession?  This is your opportunity to document what you know and upload it with the photo.

06.

The photo and description are uploaded to your online tree. You will now be able to share your accomplishment with extended family.

Upload the photos

500 Faces will work with you to complete each of these 6 steps.

We want to count your success as our success. Once you have uploaded photos on 10 ancestors, you have contributed to our goal to do this for 500 faces in the coming year.
